Nursery: Sources and DIY Bird Mobile/Art Piece

I've received a number of questions/emails about the sources for items in our nursery, and thought it would be helpful to compile a list for you.  The bird "art piece" I originally made as a mobile, but it was too much with the painting, so I decided to still use it because I liked it so much.  The running joke between Red and I is that I come up with all the good ideas and then get people to do all the work for me.  That said, my mom is an amazing seamstress and helped me sew each of these little birds as well as my crib sheet (thanks mom:).

I found the pattern for the birds on this site (via pinterest). We stuffed them, and then I found the driftwood at our local beach.    

~

1. Crib sheet- my mom made for me....I got the fabric from this lovely shop.

2.  Triangle pillow-in the corner was from this etsy shop (one of my favorites really).

3.  Other pillows/bench- I already owned.

4.  Vintage crates- craigslist

5. Vintage dresser- craigslist

Nursery Complete

Well it's finally done!  I have to say I had way more fun with this room than I initially anticipated.  I have never been a super "baby" person.  So when I approached the idea of a nursery with the mindset of designing a beautiful room vs. the mindset of creating a generic baby room it became really fun really fast.  Now I just can't wait to meet our little girl.....

About the room:  1.  It's a nursery on a budget!  Our job was made a little easier with the room being so small.  

2.  One thing that was really important to us was purchasing our bigger items with the vision of moving them to other parts of our house some day down the road.  That is, our bigger purchases weren't very "baby" so as to be long term investments.  I also wanted to create a room that we would want to be in (not just baby girl)......this was simply put "more us". 

 3.  You may notice there are no curtains......that's because we are moving within the year (more permanently).  I actually prefer no curtains here because it would be overwhelming for this small space......plus there is character in the old windows.  For all you concerned moms, we will figure some other way for darkening the room during naps.

This Memorial Day

All of the blogs are abuzz with what to wear this Memorial Day weekend and everyone is making plans for weekend trips/cookouts.  I can understand this, because I don't think I realized the weight of Memorial Day until the past few years when it became personal.  Run to Remember is an organization close to my heart.  Both my and Lisa's husband were deployed at the same time from Ft. Lewis, WA.  Though I didn't get to know her until a few months after her husband John passed, her strength and her story impacted me in more ways than I can say.  I went to a lot of Soldier homecomings that summer, and it was very real the number of guys who were not coming home.  This first picture is from the 2010 Rock n' Roll Seattle Marathon where I was able to be a part of Run to Remember and hold a flag representing a Fallen Soldier in the unit.   I stood next to a young widow my age holding her flag with her baby and stroller next to her, and we cheered as other widows ran for their husbands.  It was the most moving experience I have yet to be a part of (see the video here).  I have never been more proud of the sacrifices made for our country, past and present.  So this Memorial Day, I encourage you to take a moment......better yet run or walk a few miles and pledge here.  Get your family involved!   Also check out Lisa's story featured in Runner's World here.   Enjoy your weekend and see you Tuesday.

Stripe It

I know a lot of these images are/have been floating around the internet for a while, but that's the thing about stripes.  Everybody loves them.  They are a classic and a staple, and will always be around.  Somehow stripes have the ability to remain fresh and new every season.  They make old images still relevant, and that's what draws me.

Genius

Ok.  Maybe you've already seen this, but on the off chance you haven't I just had to share.  This timber archway you are looking at was made for Clerkenwell Design Week in London by designer Giles Miller.  It's comprised of 20,000 wooden hexagonal pixels all set at different angles.    Pretty cool, right?  I can't stop staring at it.  Check out Miller's site too, he's got some major talent.

DIY Driftwood Mirror

You may recall that mirror I was working on last fall and me promising to do a tutorial?  Well, it would have happened sooner, but I ran out of driftwood and the snow kept me from finding the right pieces( at least that's my story).  I finally finished, and even feel a little silly doing a  tutorial because it's so simple and uncomplicated.

1.  First off, I bought a mirror from Ikea for $10

2.  I found driftwood off the shore of Lake Ontario (think lots and lots of trips).  I may or may not have been that neighbor- I at least felt like it.

3.  This may be an obvious one, but I found (through trial and error) that mounting the mirror before applying the driftwood was the best way to go about this.  I then simply used a glue gun and started adding layer upon layer upon layer.  *You should note that you do not want to have any glue strings hanging when applying.  This will just end up being a disaster (not that I know).

 5.  And there you have it!  Total cost was roughly $13 ($3 for the fixtures to hang the mirror)!

Pin-test

Last week I celebrated my last day of work with getting a much needed haircut.  I'm lucky enough to have a friend who is an amazing stylist, so she came over to my place and we made a day of it with a couple other girlfriends getting their hair done as well.  It was an overall fun girl day, and I decided to try these Coconut-Lemon Meltaways as a healthy treat.  They did not disappoint!

Ingredients:  

1 1/2 c. almond flour

1 1/2 c. shredded unsweetened coconut

1/3 c. coconut flour

2 pinches of salt

6 Tblsp Agave Nectar (I used honey)

1 Tblsp. Lemon zest

4 Tblsp Lemon juice (2-3 lemons)

2 tsp. vanilla

1/4 c. + 1Tblsp (Melted) Coconut Oil

Directions:

1.  Mix dry ingredients in bowl (almond flour, coconut, coconut flour, and salt)

2.  Mix next 4 wet ingredients in seperate bowl (agave, lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla)

3.  Slowly (with mixer) combine wet ingredients in with the dry.

4.  Finally add in the melted coconut oil to thicken the mixture

5.  Make into cookies and either a) dehydrate or keep them in a warm oven for 1 hr  OR b) cool them in your fridge for an hour.  I tried both and preferred them warm out of the oven.  Enjoy!
